The news of the passing of Hazrat Maulana Dr. Saeed-ur-Rahman Azmi Nadwi (RA), a renowned Islamic scholar, distinguished Arabic litterateur, prolific author, journalist, preacher, mentor, and Rector of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow, has caused profound grief and sorrow in academic and religious circles. His demise is a great loss to India’s scholarly and religious landscape and an irreparable loss to the field of Arabic language and literature.
Expressing his deep grief over the loss, Mr. Mohammad Alam, Secretary General of the Institute of Objective Studies (IOS), stated that Maulana Saeed-ur-Rahman Azmi Nadwi (RA) dedicated his entire life to the service of knowledge and education, authorship and compilation, Islamic outreach and mentorship, and the Arabic language and literature. He remained associated with Nadwatul Ulama for a long period, discharging administrative responsibilities alongside his teaching and mentoring duties.
His contributions to Arabic journalism were also significant. In particular, his long association with the renowned Arabic journal Al-Ba’th al-Islami played a pivotal role in strengthening scholarly and intellectual ties between India and the Arab world. He was also conferred a Presidential Award by the Government of India in recognition of his services to the Arabic language and literature.
Recalling the Maulana’s close association with the Institute of Objective Studies, Mr. Mohammad Alam noted that Hazrat Maulana Saeed-ur-Rahman Azmi Nadwi maintained deep scholarly and intellectual ties with the IOS and its founder, Dr. Mohammad Manzoor Alam. The Maulana held the academic and intellectual activities of the IOS in high regard. He participated in numerous programmes, seminars, and conferences organized by the Institute and delivered inaugural and keynote addresses at several important scholarly gatherings.
In 2018, Maulana Saeed-ur-Rahman Azmi Nadwi delivered the inaugural address at the international conference organized by the IOS on Professor Ismail Raji al-Faruqi. He also participated in the 2019 national conference organized by the IOS on the life and contributions of Allama Habib-ur-Rahman Azmi. A notable highlight of his association with the Institute was the honour bestowed upon him when the IOS presented him with its Fifth Lifetime Achievement Award on February 15, 2013, in recognition of his distinguished contributions to scholarship and intellectual life.
Expressing hope that the Maulana’s scholarly legacy would continue to inspire future generations, Mr. Mohammad Alam stated that the passing of Maulana Saeed-ur-Rahman Azmi Nadwi has created a significant void within Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, the field of Arabic language and literature, Indian Islamic seminaries, and scholarly and research circles. It is hoped that his students, academic associates, and all those who benefited from his guidance will continue to carry forward his intellectual and moral legacy.
On behalf of the IOS, Mr. Alam offered his heartfelt condolences to the family of Hazrat Maulana Dr. Saeed-ur-Rahman Azmi Nadwi, the faculty and students of Nadwatul Ulama, his disciples, associates, and all those connected with him.
“May Allah Almighty forgive the deceased, accept his good deeds, elevate his spiritual station, make his scholarly and religious contributions a source of ongoing reward (Sadaqah Jariyah) for him, and bless the Muslim Ummah with a worthy successor. Ameen,” he prayed.
