Rahul meet dalit in Gujarat

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi Thursday visited Una in Gujarat and met the the kin of the Dalit families who were beaten up for skinning a dead cow. Rahul assured them of all help. He also had tea with the family members of the victims in the remote village of Mota Samadhiyala near Una town of Gir-Somnath district, where the incident took place on 11th July.

Mr. Gandhi also visited the Rajkot Civil Hospital where he met the people who attempted suicide during the protests that erupted across the state over the issue.

He said that the weaker sections of the society are being terrorised and trampled upon in Gujarat. Bringing up Rohith Vemula suicide issue, Rahul linked the Hyderabad campus incident with suicide attempts by youths during the ongoing dalit protests in Gujarat.

BJP terms Rahul’s visit to Gujarat as political stunt

BJP has termed Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Gujarat to meet the Una incident victims’ family as political stunt. Briefing media New Delhi, senior party leader and Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu took a dig at Mr. Gandhi, saying that at a time when Parliament is debating the issue, he should have been there. Mr. Naidu wondered, why he did not visit Kerala and other places where dalit atrocities took place in recent past.

Mr Naidu said, state government has taken prompt action against the people behind the ghastly crime in which some dalits were thrashed over the allegation of killing of cow. He accused the Congress and the BSP of politicizing the issue. The Minister said the BJP and the NDA government are committed for the social cohesion and will take every step in this direction.
