Smriti-IraniUnion Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani has said that Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has assured her over maintaining law and order at NIT campus in Srinagar where students from outside that State were caned by police during an unrest at the campus. Ms.

Irani also said that officials from her Ministry have been deputed at the campus to help worried students and their parents.

The HRD Minister informed that Ms. Mehbooba Mufti said that an inquiry has been initiated as to how such an incident happened there. Ms Irani said there are exams from April 11 and officials from the HRD Ministry will stay there till exams get over. Meanwhile, Minister of State for HRD, Ram Shankar Katheria said in Agartala yesterday that student unrest at the NIT needs to be solved through negotiation.

A fact-finding team of the Ministry of Human Resources visited the institute’s campus yesterday for an on the spot assessment of the situation. The 2-member team comprising a Director level and a Deputy Secretary level officer also spoke to the students to get their version of the events. Prior to this, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had a discussion over the matter with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. The Chief Minister assured him of giving serious consideration to the matter followed by swift action.
