BJP president Nitin Nabin on Monday unveiled his much-awaited national team, nearly 200 days after taking charge, naming 76 office-bearers in a mix of senior and junior leaders. The new team has an average age of around 60, with only 12 women finding a place in the organisation.
Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is the lone sitting Union minister inducted into the organisational team, being appointed National Treasurer. No other serving Union minister has been included.
Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia, 73, who had maintained a low profile within the party organisation for several years, made a surprise return as a national vice-president. She is among 13 leaders appointed to the post.
BJP national general secretary (organisation) B.L. Santosh, who had been officiating in the key organisational position, has retained his place in the new team.
Several leaders with RSS backgrounds have also been accommodated in the reshuffle. However, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who stepped down amid the CJP agitation, has not found a place in the new organisational structure.
The composition of the team has also drawn attention to the party’s representation of women. Despite the BJP’s commitment to implementing 33 per cent reservation for women, only 12 out of the 76 members—around 15 per cent—are women.
