Newly appointed Education Minister of Bihar Mewa Lal Chaudhary today resigned from his post amid a lot of criticism from opposition parties over corruption charges.

On the advice of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar the governor Phagu Chauhan has accepted his resignation. Building Construction Minister Ashok Choudhary has been given additional charge of Education Minister.

Mr Chaudhary who took over charge of his office earlier in the day met the Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in Patna. After the meeting with the Chief Minister he resigned from the post.

Mewa Lal Chaudhary a former Vice Chancellor of Bihar Agriculture University, Sabour in Bhagalpur is second term JD(U) MLA from Tarapur assembly constituency.

Criminal cases under Sections 420, 409, 467, 120 (B) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) are pending against him. The former VC is facing corruption charges in appointments of academic posts like Assistant Professors and Junior Scientists in the university. Cases of irregularities have also been filed against him in construction of buildings during his Vice Chancellor tenure of 2010-2015.

Taking exception to the induction of JD(U) leader in Nitish Kumar led cabinet, the RJD leader Tejaswi Prasad Yadav had alleged that Mr Chaudhary was rewarded with ministerial post on his scandals. He had demanded sacking of the education minister.
