Mamang Dai, Ramesh Kuntal among winners

sahityaSahitya Akademi Thursday announced its annual awards for 2017 in 24 languages. Seven novels, five collections each of poetry and short stories, five works of literary criticism, a play and a book of essays have won the awards.

This year, Mamang Dai will get the award in English language for his novel The Black Hill. Ramesh Kuntal Megh has won the award in Hindi for his literary criticism work Vishw Mithak Sarit Sagar.

Briefing media in New Delhi, Secretary of Sahitya Akademi K. Sreenivasarao said, the books were selected on the basis of recommendations made by a jury of three members in the concerned languages in accordance with the procedure laid down for the purpose.

The award in the form of a casket containing an engraved copper-plaque, a shawl and a cheque of 1 lakh rupees will be presented to the authors at a special function.

The Sahitya Akademi also announced its annual prize for translation. The prize carries an amount of 50 thousand rupees and copper plaque.
