AMU order probe into violence, Normalcy return to the campus

AMUAuthorities at the Aligarh Muslim University, AMU has decided to institute a high level probe by an “external agency” into last night violence in the campus that took two lives.  

At an emergency meeting of top AMU officials including all Deans, the AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah took stock of the situation in the campus and decided to institute a high level probe by an “external agency” into the campus violence.

Situation in campus is peaceful even as heavy presence of security personnel is seen in and around the campus. The Vice Chancellor met the agitated students and ensured there was no further disturbance on the campus. The B.Tech. and B.Arch. admission tests were conducted smoothly today.

altercation between two groups in the morning of 23rd April 2016 is said to have resulted in some incidents of firing near the Proctor’s office, where the contending groups assembled to get respective FIRs lodged with the police.

Later, some more violence and firing were reported in which one ex-student, Mahtab was killed. Another youth, Waqif, not a student of AMU, received serious injuries and was, later, shifted to Delhi for treatment.

The Vice Chancellor Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah met the agitated students and ensured there was no further disturbance on the campus. The B.Tech. and B.Arch. admission tests were conducted smoothly on 24 April 2016.

These entrance tests were conducted today at 39 examination centres smoothly in which more than 17000 candidates appeared. The AMU Vice Chancellor, Pro-Vice Chancellor and other University officials visited different test centres in Aligarh and expressed satisfaction on the peaceful conduct of the examination test.

The DIG (Police), Mr. Govind Agrawal, the District Magistrate, Dr. Balkar Singh, the Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr. J. Ravindra Gaur and other district and police officials visited the campus and met the Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah, assuring to provide all necessary assistance to maintain peace on the University campus.

The Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Shah said, “The disturbing incident of firing and arson in AMU Campus by two groups of primarily ex-students is regrettable. This disorder was the result of old rivalry between the two groups. Groupism requires a strong action and this process has commenced”.

The Vice Chancellor also convened another meeting with the Provosts of halls of residence and wardens in which it was decided to regulate the timings of internet and WiFi services available in the various Halls of residence. This step is being taken to discourage students from wasting time on frivolous activities during night hours. Under this measure internet accessibility will not be available in the Halls of residence from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. in the morning.
