Nepal’s first woman Chief Justice Sushila Karki resumed office last evening after the Supreme Court ordered her reinstatement and directed Parliament to put on hold the impeachment motion against her.

The court issued the order saying that the impeachment move was against the spirit of the country’s Constitution. The order came in response to a writ petition against the motion.

Justice Karki was suspended after an impeachment motion was registered in Parliament by ruling Nepali Congress and CPN (Maoist Centre). They accused her of interfering with the executive and issuing prejudiced verdicts.

As a fallout of the motion, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Bimalendra Nidhi had resigned expressing his dissatisfaction with the move. He, later, withdrew his resignation.

Also, Nepal’s Rastriya Prajatantra Party had quit the Prachanda-led government, a day after withdrawing its support to it over the impeachment motion against Justice Karki.
