Information and Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu has said the Uniform Civil Code will not be brought through the back door and without a consensus.
He rejected the charge that the contentious issue has been raked up by the BJP to polarise elections, especially in Uttar Pradesh. In an interview to a News Agency, Mr. Naidu asserted that the BJP will fight UP polls on development agenda and issues like triple talaq, civil code and Ram temple will not be used for political mileage.
He said, the government does not consider triple talaq as a religious matter as it is a question of gender sensitivity. He added that it is wrong to say that the Centre is interfering in Muslim issues saying the same Parliament had brought Hindu Code Bill, Divorce Act and banned dowry.
