TIME, the international magazine, has created a flutter in Indian political and social circle with its latest issue (May 20 issue). The magazine has featured Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the cover page with a headline reads “India’s Divider in Chief” and carries a caricature of the Prime Minister.

This title pertains to the article in the magazine, written by Aatish Taseer with the headline “Can the World’s Largest Democracy Endure Another Five Years of a Modi Government?”

The issue has become viral on social media with both pro-Modi and anti-Modi group are debating over the credibility of the magazine

The story compares former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s idea of secularism with the prevailing social “stress” under Modi who “demonstrated no desire to foster brotherly feelings between Hindus and Muslims,” the article read.

Besides, the article also recalled the Gujarat riots that allegedly claimed lives of scores of people.

In 2019 the same magazine has praised the Narendra Modi on the cover page saying ” Why Modi matters”

The Congress on Friday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of ruling the country by dividing it, and also used the Time magazine cover headline that says “India’s Divider in Chief”, followed by a secondary one that reads “Modi the Reformer”.

Congress’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said the way the party had removed the British from the country, it would do the same with Modi.

“Modiji’s definition – divide and rule. The Congress first freed the country of the British and will now remove Modi too,” Surjewala said in a tweet in Hindi, along with the cover of the Time magazine that also carried a picture of Modi.
