Sri Lankan navy has arrested ten Indian fishermen along with their boat on charges of poaching into Sri Lankan waters. A navy spokesman said the fishermen were arrested north of point Pedro last night.
They have been handed over to fisheries department in Jaffna for further legal action. With the latest arrests, the total number of Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody has gone up to 99. Indian high Commission in Colombo has initiated proceedings for release of the detained fishermen.
Sri Lankan government has been releasing the fishermen on a regular basis on humanitarian grounds but more than 150 fishing boats are still into their custody for past couple of years.
