International Labour Day is being observed in Sri Lanka today with a focus this year on ensuring safety and health at work amidst a changing climate. Rallies and demonstrations are being held to commemorate May Day, in solidarity with the international labour community across the island. In Colombo alone, 14 May Day parades and rallies are scheduled to take place, with approximately 40 events planned across Sri Lanka. Major political parties are holding the rallies at various places due to which elaborate arrangements to manage traffic have been put in place by Sri Lankan police.
In his May Day Message, President Ranil Wickremesinghe has extended an invitation to all political parties to come together and collaborate in paving the way towards a prosperous future for the island nation. He called towards building consensus, recognizing the current trends and challenges, Instead of the traditional May Day celebrations.
