A two-day Conference of Chairpersons of Public Accounts Committee (PAC), PAC of Parliament and State Legislatures, was inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, today in New Delhi.

Mrs. Mahajan in her address said, PAC’s are indeed a pillar of parliamentary accountability and this pillar rests on the shoulders of its members, hence the member of these committee should take utmost interest in its functioning.

Quoting Kautilya’s statement from Arthashastra, Mrs Mahajan said, all enterprises depend on finance and utmost care is to be given to the treasury. Dwelling on the important role of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India and the PAC, she said, they both deal with three A’s- Accounts, Audit, and Accountability.

she expressed the hope that if possible, another ‘A’ will be added to this in the form of Appreciation wherever due, so that innovative and good practices and projects can be replicated elsewhere.

Earlier, PAC Chairman KV Thomas, welcomed delegates from 28 states and union territories. Mr Thomas in his address, stressed that the PAC, which is going to complete 100 years, six years from now, should not be allowed to become redundant.
