Eleven newborn babies died in a hospital fire in the western city of Tivaouane in Senegal. Senegal President Macky Sall tweeted that the fire occurred at the Maternity Department of Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh Hospital. He expressed his deepest sympathy to the mothers and families of the victims.

Initial reports suggest the fire was caused by a short circuit, according to politicians.

City’s Mayor Demba Diop Sy said that three babies were saved from the fire. It is reported that the hospital had been newly inaugurated.

Health Minister Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr said from Geneva that the situation is very unfortunate and extremely painful.
