The Rajya Sabha today bid farewell to the retiring members with Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauding them for their valuable contribution to the cause of country’s development.
He said their contribution accompanied by experience will be a value addition to the Upper House. Mr Modi said that his office doors are always open to the retiring members for making suggestions.
Earlier, Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu regretted that disruptions have unfortunately a part of political tactic and the House has often become the theatre of protest politics.
He hoped that a more constructive engagement with public issues in the future and a behaviour that befits the dignity and stature that people of the country have bestowed upon the House.
Deputy Chairman Prof PJ Kurien, who is also retiring, said it is the duty of both the government and the opposition to uphold the principles of democracy.
The leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said no politician is retired and the farewell is only a formality.
