U.S. President Barack Obama has credited strong American diplomacy for key milestones with Iran in a 24-hour period, including confirmation that Tehran has significantly rolled back its nuclear program, released American prisoners and resolved a three-decade-old financial dispute. The president spoke today after receiving confirmation that all five Americans released by Iran had departed the country.

Obama announced a settlement between the US and Iran at The Hague, in which Iran received 400 millions of US Dollar in funds frozen since 1981 and 1.3 billion USD in interest. This, he said, would save US money and time, as there was no point in dragging out the dispute and continuing to pay interest on the money.

Obama while addressing from the White House said now that Iran’s actions have been verified, it can begin to receive relief from certain nuclear sanctions and gain access to its own money that had been frozen. The United States and five other global powers lifted sanctions on Iran yesterday after a report by the U.N. nuclear watchdog saying Tehran had fulfilled its commitments to cut back its nuclear program.
