A Myanmar court today sentenced the ousted State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi to four years jail term. She was found guilty of inciting dissent against the military and breaking the epidemic rules relating to COVID 19 under the Myanmar Natural Disaster law. It is the first of a series of possible sentences against Aung San Suu Kyi. She faces 11 charges in total, which have been widely condemned as unjust. She has denied all charges.

The former deposed President Win Myint has also been found guilty by the court. He has been awarded a four-year’s jail sentence.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been under detention after the military ousted the civilian government headed by her on February 1 this year a day before the newly elected parliament was to meet. Aung San Suu Kyi’s party National League for Democracy (NLD) had secured a vast majority in the November 2020 national elections defeating the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP).

Aung San Suu Kyi is facing charges of violating the official secrets act, corruption and electoral fraud. On conviction under these charges she may face a very long sentence running into several years.
