Keralites across the world are celebrating Thiruvonam today on a joyful mode. Onam is one of the rarest festivals which is celebrated by a complete State, irrespective of religion, caste and creed.
The harvest festival of Kerala, signifies the annual visit of King Mahabali from Patala, the nether world. The King was so attached to his kingdom that it is believed, he comes annually to see his subjects living happily. It is in honour of King Mahabali, whose rule is considered the golden era of Kerala, Onam is celebrated.
People celebrate the fete by making floral carpets called Pookkalam, preparing sumptuous feasts and joining various games associated with Onam. From being a harvest festival deep-rooted in tradition, Onam has, however, undergone a paradigm shift over the years.
Elders say, amidst the entire heat and dust, the festival is losing its soul, at least to some extent. They feel, Onam now appears yet another brand and luxurious carnival. The State Government has launched week-long celebrations that will conclude on Sunday with a pageantry.
President and Vice President and Prime Minister have greeted the people on auspicious occasion of Onam. In his message, President Pranab Mukherjee said, Onam is a festival celebrated by people of all religion, caste and community with equal joy, underlying the secular fabric of the society.
Vice President Hamid Ansari said the festival celebrated with traditional gaiety and enthusiasm and it reflects the central role of agriculture in the society. In a tweet, Prime Minister prayed that this special festival furthers the atmosphere of harmony and happiness across the nation.
The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has greeted the people, on the festival of Onam. “Onam wishes to you all. I pray that this special festival furthers the atmosphere of harmony and happiness across our nation.” the Prime Minister said.
