Tehran Police have decided to relax restrictions on women regarding the Islamic dress code which include a ban on wearing nail polish, heavy makeup or loose headscarves. The Police said they would no longer arrest women for breaching the dress code.

The Tehran Police said violators will be ordered to take police-instructed classes on Islamic values while repeat offenders could still be subject to legal action. It has long been demanded by the young and reform-minded Iranians who helped re-elect President Hassan Rouhani, a relative moderate, earlier this year. However hard-liners opposed to easing such rules. For nearly 40 years, women in Iran have been forced to cover their hair and wear long, loose garments. However,younger and more liberal-minded have long pushed the boundaries of the official dress code, drawing the ire of conservatives.
