Maldivian government today said that a family member of former President Mohamed Nasheed will have to sign a guarantee document before he can be allowed to go to United Kingdom for medical treatment.

According to a statement issued by the Maldivian Foreign Ministry today, it a matter of Maldivian law that any convicted person who requests to travel abroad is required to sign a surety of return which is co-signed by a proposed guarantor. The statement adds that the guarantor may at any time transfer his or her obligation to another guarantor if they are required to travel abroad.

Nasheed had yesterday said that none of his family members would sign the surety document. According to political sources, discussions between Nasheed’s party, the MDP and the government are continuing to find a solution to the impasse.
