Muslim groups are comparing the incident of police firing in Forbesganj in Araria on June 3 with the anti-Muslim pogrom in Gujarat in 2002. The tragic video of a policeman jumping over a body after firing at a crowd mainly consisting of Muslims in Forbesganj is being circulated widely over internet.
Arshad Madani, president of Jamiat, said: “We are waiting for the judicial enquiry report. If the government does not act on the report then we will take necessary action. But as of now the top policemen should be suspended immediately.”
“How can the enquiry take place in unbiased manned when the top officials remain there.” The Jamiat leader was speaking to reporters here on wide ranging issues concerning Muslims. Forbesganj incident appeared to be the top most agenda of the Jamiat, an organization founded in 1920 and which opposed the Partition of the country on religious lines in 1947.
Earlier, Congress MP Maulana Asrarul Haque Qasmi had demanded removal of Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Modi for tacitly supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Legislative Council (MLC) who is considered as the architect of police firing in Forbesganj. Police began indiscriminate firing on a crowd protesting against the construction of boundary wall of a factory which blocked the only road connecting the village from the national highway.
Though a judicial enquiry has been constituted but no action has been taken against any senior police officers present at the time of police firing. Independent reports suggested that policemen chased villagers to their home and killed five people and injured many.
