Jamaat-e-Islami Hind has condemned the Chinese government for restricting its citizens from fasting in the holy month of Ramadan. In a statement to the media, JIH President Syed Sadatullah Hussaini said: “We strongly condemn the Chinese government for banning Uighur Muslims of China from performing their fundamental religious obligation of fasting in the month of Ramadan. This repressive measure is completely unacceptable and must be challenged immediately by the international community.
The manner in which the authorities of Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region are clamping down on display of basic religious practices like keeping of beard, sporting the hijab, avoiding alcohol and fasting in Ramadan by terming them as signs of extremism and punishing those practicing them is a complete violation of human rights and should be condemned by all those who uphold freedom and justice”. The Jamaat Chief continued: ‘’Prominent Human Rights organizations are saying that China is holding at least one million Uighurs in re-education detention camps and depriving them of all basic rights including the right to practice one’s own religion. The silence of Muslim-majority countries is quite perplexing. We appeal to all peace and justice loving people to contribute their mite in highlighting the plight of these suppressed people and help in securing their legitimate rights”.
