Participating in the resumed discussion on the General Budget for 2011-12 in the Rajya Sabha, Mrs Brinda Karat opposed Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into the retail sector saying this will lead to more imbalance in the country’s economy. She felt that the budgetary proposal for enhanced indirect taxation will further impoverish the poor. Mr N K Singh of the JD(U) regretted that the budgetary allocation for agriculture is far below the expectations. He said revival of agriculture should have been given priority. The discussion was continuing when reports last came in.
