Bangladesh reported 674 fresh COVID 19 cases and four deaths on Monday as the country witnessed a spike in covid cases over the last 24 hours. This is the highest number of single day infections since October 6 when 703 cases were reported in the country. The death toll stands at 28,081 and the recovery rate is reported to be 97.65 percent.

Till now, a total of 10 people have been found infected with the new COVID 19 variant Omicron in Bangladesh. The first case was detected in two members of the Women’s cricket team that returned from Zimbabwe on December 1.

The sample positivity rate also climbed to 3.37 percent on Monday from 2.91 reported on Sunday by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The sample positivity rate has gone up slowly over the last few weeks from 1.5 percent on Dec. 1 to the current level of over 3 percent.

Bangladesh launched a special campaign to inoculate 3.32 crore people with COVID 19 vaccine in January on Saturday. The vaccination drive was launched at 1005 vaccination centres across the country.

Till now 74.48 million people have received the first dose of the vaccine while 52.84 million people received both the doses of the vaccine in a total population of over 160 million.
