The Union Government has given permission for the first ever Medical College in Port Blair. Chief Secretary of the Union Territory Administration, Anand Prakash told media persons in the Islands capital today, the “Andaman & Nicobar Islands Institute of Medical Sciences” will start functioning from 1st September this year with an initial intake of 100 students for MBBS Course.

15 seats would be filled by the Centre with those who qualify the All India Pre-Medical Entrance Test and the remaining 85 seats have been earmarked for various categories of the Islanders, for whom a separate entrance test would be held on 2nd August this year. Initially the college will function in the AYUSH hospital premises adjoining the Government GB Pant General Hospital at Port Blair.

Work is on a feverish pace near the Port Blair Airport for the construction of the permanent campus. Mr Anand Prakash said the total project cost for the medical college is Rs 342.14 crore and the Centre would give 90 percent of the funds needed.
