AMUAttorney General Mukul Rohatgi has said there is nothing political about NDA government’s decision to withdraw an appeal filed by the previous UPA regime challenging the Allahabad High Court verdict holding that Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was not a minority institution.

Mr. Rohatgi told a private TV channel that the AMU was set up by an Act of the Parliament during British rule and therefore, it is not correct to say that it was set up by Muslim body. He said, in 1967, the Supreme Court had also given a judgment that the AMU is not a minority institution and that legal position still holds.

The AG was responding to a query with regard to reasons for filing the affidavit for withdrawing its appeal against the High Court verdict. A few days ago, the government had told the Supreme Court that it will withdraw the appeal filed by the UPA government in this regard.
