The International Committee of the Red Cross has said the number of cholera cases in war-torn Yemen could hit 8,50,000 this year. According to the warning issued by the Red Cross on Wednesday, the epidemic spread faster than expected amid fierce fighting and deteriorating hygienic conditions.

Officials say half of the country’s medical facilities are not functioning due to damage from the fighting. Medicine and other necessities are in short supply, and medical workers have been left unpaid.

The Red Cross is calling for greater international support to contain what it calls the worst health crisis from a preventable disease in modern times. WHO said more than 2,000 people have died in the current outbreak in Yemen. The Saudi Arabia-backed government and opposition forces have been fighting in the country for more than 2 years.
