floodS 2The Odisha government on Sunday sounded a flood alert in six districts after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast very heavy rainfall in the upcoming next two days.

The fishermen have also been advised to be cautious while venturing into the sea along and off Odisha coast as sea condition is likely to be rough due to wind flow with 40 to 45 kmph speed and gusting up to 55 kmph along and off Odisha coast.

The Revenue and Disaster Management Department alerted the District Collectors of Jajpur, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Sundargarh and Mayurbhanj, asking them to remain fully prepared “in view of the IMD forecast of extremely heavy rainfall in the next 48 hours”, which may trigger floods in the Subarnarekha, Baitarani, Budhabalanga and Brahmani rivers.

The IMD also said in a bulletin that heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely to batter many areas of the state due to an upper air cyclonic circulation. Under the influence of the upper air cyclonic circulation over West Bengal and neighbourhood, a low-pressure area is likely to develop during next 24 hours. The situation would lead to rain or thunder shower to occur at most places in the northern region of Odisha and many places in the districts of south Odisha during next 24 hours.
