The flood situation in Assam is still grim as over 1100 villages in 17 districts are still under water. So far, at least 61 people died due to floods, in the affected districts of the state. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal apprised Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the situation.
The daily life in the state has come to a standstill due to inundated houses, roads, farms and barns. At least 25 lakh people of 29 districts of Assam are battling floods. Although there has been some respite, with the water levels receding.
The worst affected district is South Salmara where 1,25,040 people are affected, while in Morigaon district about one lakh people are facing the flood fury, the Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) report said.
The water in the Brahmaputra and the Barak rivers, as well as their tributaries, have been showing a receding trend at several places in the state with cessation of rainfall. However, the Brahmaputra River is still flowing above the danger level at Dhubri, Dhansiri at Numaligarh in Golaghat, and the Barak at Badarpurghat in Karimganj, and Kushiara River at Karimganj.
The authorities have erected nearly 1098 camps for flood victims across the states. The chief minister of Assam has requested PM Modi to launch ‘Prime Minister’s Special Programme for Flood and Erosion Control’ for developing road-cum-embankments over a distance of 5,000 km in the state.
The CM also advocated for constitution of a high level inter-ministerial team headed by a Cabinet Minister to study the impact of floods and erosion as well as suggest permanent measures for mitigating the problem. PM Modi has assured Assam CM that the Centre would actively consider the demands of the state.
