Earthquake collapsed the cathedral Norcia

Italy’s most powerful earthquake since 1980 has left more than 15,000 people homeless. According to the country’s civil protection agency, no-one was killed in the quake but 20 were injured and damage to the area round the town of Norcia is extensive.

The 6.6-magnitude quake struck near the central region where nearly 300 people were killed by a quake in August. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi is chairing a meeting of his cabinet to discuss emergency reconstruction.

The quake struck yesterday morning, destroying buildings or leaving them structurally unsafe in several towns and villages in the mountainous central region.

New quake of magnitude 4.2 in the first night after the earthquake of magnitude 6.5 on Sunday rocked central Italy. There are no victims, only 20 minor injuries. Assisted over 15 thousand people. Experts: “Probably lowering soil than 25 cm»

First night after the earthquake passed in the car or in the reception centers for the population affected by the new Sunday morning earthquake in Umbria, Marche and Lazio, with a magnitude of 6.5, the strongest since the earthquake in Campania in 1980. An earthquake that did not victims did (the budget is 20 minor injuries) but caused extensive damage and collapses in a hundred municipalities: the displaced are at least 40,000. And there are tensions: many of the people left homeless do not want to move away from the affected countries, but since the winter and the cold incumbent, the use of tents to accommodate them, as happened in other situations, it becomes more difficult.

“Lowering of soil of more than 25 cm”
And according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, by examining satellite images of areas hit by the quake of October 30 experts expect to see a reduction of more than 25 cm soil. “We are processing the images – said Simone Atzori INGV – we expect a lowering of the top soil from the two previous seismic events of August 24 and 26 October, which had peaks of 20-25 centimeters.” From satellite images is also expected to clarify whether the three earthquakes, of August 24, 26 and 30 October, to have occurred on a single fault or on a nearby fault system.
