Veteran Congress leader and former Minister, and governor of several states Mohammad Shafi Qureshi passed away in New Delhi today. He was 87.
Qureshi was the founding member of Congress party in J&K and got elected for Lok Sabha twice from Anantnag Parliamentary Constituency.
He served in various capacities in his long and active political career. He was the Union Deputy Minister of Commerce from 28-1-66 to 14-2-1969, Union Deputy Minister for Steel & Heavy Engineering from 15-2-69 to 2-5-1971, Union Deputy Minister for Railways from 10-10-1974 to March 1977, Minister of Tourism & Civil Aviation (31-7-79).
He was sworn in as Governor of Bihar 91-93. He was appointed Governor of Madhya Pradesh on 24.6.93. Sworn in as Governor of Uttar Pradesh on 3 May 1996.
He was a student of Aligarh Muslim University and was the secretary of the Faculty of Law, AMU Law Society in the year 1953.[3]
He was alaos the Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities.
and became Deputy Union Minister of Railways.
Later, Qureshi was appointed as Governor of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and other states and served the people to the best of his ability.
Qureshi was also JKPCC president twice.
He was an intellectual, a leader with a great acumen and visionary also. While having serving the country and state in different capacities, the deceased remained dedicated to the cause of serving people all along his life.
The J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti in her condolence message while expressing sympathies with the bereaved family prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul.
In his message J&K PCC Chief G A Mir said, βhe was the founding member of Congress party in J&K and got elected for Lok Sabha twice from Islamabad Parliamentary Constituency and became Deputy Union Minister of Railways.β
During his tenure Pathankote β Jammu rail service was started and after that he got the survey done for Jammu Baramulla railway service, Mir said.
