French President Emmanuel Macron has vowed legal action against those responsible for violence during protests across the country and described it as an attempt to bring ‘down the republic’. In a televised address to the nation yesterday, Macron said those responsible for vandalism and looting would be held accountable. He also stressed the importance of distinguishing between protesters with legitimate grievances and those involved in violent incidents.

According to France’s Interior Ministry, nearly two thousand four hundred people were arrested on Saturday, while around one thousand police officers and gendarmes were injured during the unrest. Several government buildings, shops and public properties were damaged, with incidents reported in multiple cities. Macron said the government would review the events and take appropriate steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

He emphasised the importance of restoring public order while ensuring the safety of residents and local communities affected by the unrest. The president also acknowledged the challenges faced by people whose businesses, homes and neighbourhoods had been affected. He announced plans to establish a crisis unit to coordinate urgent assistance for those impacted by the violence and help communities recover from the damage.
