Bangladesh has approved the procurement of 40,000 body-worn cameras for police to boost transparency during the February parliamentary polls. The decision was cleared at a meeting chaired by Finance Adviser Salauddin Ahmed, who said: “These cameras are essential for the police. We have approved the proposal and must procure them swiftly.”
He added the purchase would be routed through UNDP to ensure quality and avoid irregularities. “The government is paying, but we must procure from the private sector. Using UNDP ensures transparency,” he said, clarifying the cost will be met from the election budget under the Finance Ministry. “This is not for the Election Commission, it is for the police force,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus told US Special Envoy Sergio Gor that Bangladesh is “fully prepared” for the vote. “The election will be held in February. It will be free, fair and peaceful,” Yunus said.
According to Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, Gor praised Yunus’s leadership and pledged US support. Talks also covered trade, SAARC revival, the Rohingya crisis and disinformation campaigns targeting Dhaka.
