The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has said that there were 3,774 civilian casualties since Taliban takeover. According to a report released yesterday, 1,095 civilians of these were killed and 2,679 wounded since mid-August 2021 until the end of May this year. Majority of these deaths were caused by improvised explosive devices. This includes suicide bombings in public places such as mosques, education centres and markets.

The report said, though armed fighting has fallen since the Taliban took over, security challenges remain, particularly from Islamic State (ISIS). The report also said that a sharp drop in donor funding made it difficult for victims to access medical, financial and psychological support. It also expressed concern over the lethality of the attacks.
