The newly elected President of Bangladesh Mohammed Shahabuddin has said Bangladesh considers India as the closest and the most important neighbour. He termed the existing bilateral ties as ‘strong and unique’. President Mohammed Shahabuddin made this remark when High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh Pranay Verma paid a courtesy call on him in Dhaka on Tuesday, reports the official news agency BSS.
He gratefully recalled the important role played by the people and government of India in the Liberation War of Bangladesh. During the meeting, President Shahabuddin recalled his days in 1971 when he received training as a Liberation War Fighter in India.
Referring to the visit of the President and Prime Minister of India to Bangladesh and the visit of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India, President Shahabuddin said that the visits have opened a new chapter in the relationship between the two countries.
High Commissioner Pranay Verma said India attaches a special importance to the development of relations with Bangladesh. He said that the connectivity between the two countries has grown rapidly over the last decade to benefit the people of India and Bangladesh. He also appreciated the ‘zero tolerance policy’ of the government of Bangladesh towards terrorism and militancy which has resulted in stability in the region and contributed positively to the economic development of both the countries.
Deputy High Commissioner of India Dr. Binoy George was also present on the occasion.
