7/11 Mumbai train blasts case: convicts should not be given death penalty, plead lawyers

(Last Updated On: 23/09/2015)

The defence lawyers in the 7/11 Mumbai train blasts case have pleaded that none of the convicts should be given death penalty. Winding up their arguments on the quantum of punishment, the defence lawyers said the convicts were mere foot-soldiers and not the masterminds.

Meanwhile, Special Public Prosecutor Raja Thakare began his arguments and said that he will not seek death penalty for all the 12 convicts. Mr. Thakare informed the court today that even though all the accused stood on the same platform as far as the gravity of the offence was concerned; he would still pray for life imprisonment in some cases.

Stating the involvement of a foreign hand, Mr. Thakare said that the blasts were conducted to disturb peace, create a fear psychosis in the minds of Mumbai commuters and to cause breach of public order.

Mr. Thakare further argued that all the accused were settled, well-educated, had occupations and families, but none of them had second thoughts about participating in the crime.
