More than 1400 primary teachers have resigned from service fearing government action over possession of fake education certificate in Bihar. More such teachers are expected to resign in the coming days after a Patna High Court order asked those possessing fake educational degrees to quit their jobs on their own to avoid facing legal action.

Education Department Principal Secretary R K Mahajan said that the government has fixed a deadline of July 8 for it, after which strict action would be taken ,including lodging of FIRs , termination of services, and recovery of salaries and other benefits given to these teachers.

Earlier the Patna High Court directed the Director General of Vigilance to verify educational and professional degrees of nearly 40,000 contract teachers – who are suspected of forging their degrees – and submit a compliance report within three weeks.

The state government had appointed nearly 3.5 lakh contract teachers at primary, middle and high schools levels since 2006.
