Heavy polling has been recorded in several place spread over 14 districts in lower Assam and the Bodo belt.
Political fortune of 496 candidates was sealed in ballot boxes in this phase of elections.
Chief Electoral Officer of the State Hemanta Narzary said an estimated 70.35 per cent electorates exercised their franchise in Monday’s polling. Narzary said the poll percentage may further go up as reports from some remote areas are yet to come in. In the first phase of polling on the 4th of this month, voting took place in 62 constituencies. The polling Monday passed off peacefully barring a few stray incidents in some voting centres at Rangiya, Morigaon and Jaleswar. Police had to open fire there to control groups indulging in violence.
Barring few minor incidents in some voting centres at Rangiya, Morigaon, Jaleswar, Samoguri and Dhubri, polling was by and large peaceful in other parts. Highest polling of 84 per cent was recorded at Barama Constituency in Nalbari district followed by 83 per cent at Bijni constituency in Bongaigaon district. Women voters outnumbered the men in the four districts of Bodoland Territorial Council. Political fortune of 496 candidates including nine sitting Ministers and two former Chief Ministers- Bhumidhar Barman and Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, former opposition leader Chandra Mohan Patowary and former Assembly Speaker Pulakesh Baruah has been sealed in EVMs.
