PM in China to attend BRICS summit

He would also hold bilateral talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, Brazilian President Dilma Rouseff and South African President Jacob Zuma.

Dr. Singh arrived in this Port city of southern China Tuesday evening to attend the third BRICS summit.

According to AIR the Prime Minister will be in Sanya for three days after which he will travel to Kazakhstan as part of five-day two-nation tour. Dr Singh said that he looks forward to a wide ranging exchange of views with leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa on the state of world economy and the contribution which BRICS can make in sustaining the process of global economic and financial recovery. India would like to discuss and understand the viewpoint of other member countries on the international financial and economic situation, inflation that is affecting several countries and volatility in currency.

Earlier, in his departure statement, Dr. Singh said, BRICS leaders can contribute in sustaining the process of global financial recovery, even as fresh uncertainties have emerged due to recent developments in different parts of the world.

The prime Minister said that coordination among the BRICS countries will work to the advantage of the grouping. The key areas of coordination include sustainable development, balanced growth, energy and food security, reform in the international financial institutions besides balance of trade.

The volatile situation in Gulf and North African countries, including Libya, considering the feeling of uncertainty it has created with regard to energy supplies and prices. Our correspondent covering the Prime Minister’s visit reports, Dr. Singh has two important bilateral meetings tomorrow with the Presidents of China and Russia.

On the second leg of his visit Dr. Singh will leave for Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan to have summit meeting with its president to move forward in the areas of political and security cooperation with Kazakhstan. The Prime Minister said that he will build upon the successful visit of the Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev to India in 2009 to enhance partnership in trade and investment.

With the focus on energy and trade, India and Kazakhstan are expected to sign at least six agreements, including one on civil nuclear cooperation. The two sides will ink an inter-governmental framework pact on non-military atomic cooperation.
