British Prime Minister David Cameron has suggested that the gap between Western countries and Russia over the conflict in Syria has narrowed. Cameron spoke at a news conference in Turkey, commenting on his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the G20 summit.
The United States and European countries have demanded that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad step down, while Russia continues to support Assad. The British leader told reporters that both the West and Russia recognize the need to compromise.
Cameron said he asked Putin to support a transfer of power from the Assad regime. Cameron commented on the need to find ways for the West and Russia to cooperate towards common goals to end the civil war in Syria and defeat Islamic State militants
