The foundation stone for the modernisation and upgradation works of the Cochin Fishing Harbour was laid at a function held at Willingdon Island in Kochi today. Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Parshottam Rupala and Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonwal, who joined him online, jointly laid the foundation stone for the project, to be completed at a cost of 169 crore rupees.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rupala said the fisheries sector can contribute immensely to the food security of the nation. He said the Sagar Parikrama programme initiated by him is aimed at identifying the gaps at the ground level and prioritising necessary changes with regard to policies.
Addressing the event, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said the modernisation of the Cochin Fishing Harbour, expected to be completed next year, will boost exports of fish and fish products to the tune of 1500 crore rupees per annum. Stating that coastal economic development is a key component of the ambitious Sagar Mala Project, he expressed hope that through various initiatives of the Government, fishermen will be empowered, enabling them to contribute to strengthening further the country’s economy.
