The Left organisations in Tripura, led by the ruling CPI (M), on Wednesday held a state-wide protest by forming human chain against the Union Government in support of their six-point charter of demand.
Alleging that the Centre is perusing anti-people policies, the demonstrators formed human chains on both sides of the roads in capital Agartala as well as all over the state for half-an-hour at noon on Wednesday. Although traffic was normal at most of the places, reports of disruption of normal life came in from some districts during the agitation when the agitators started queuing up to form the chains well ahead of the scheduled time.
Sources in the CPI (M) state committee claimed that a 32 KMs-long human chain was formed in the state capital and its suburbs while the formation all over the state was no less than 323 KMs long.
This was the culmination of a fortnight-long agitation of rallies and mass-processions launched by the CPI (M) and its associate Left organisations in the state. The demands include restoration of the cut in allocation of funds for MG-NREGA and other rural development and welfare projects, providing 35 KGs of rice to poor people at the rate of Rs. 2 each month, providing special status funds to Tripura and all the other north-eastern states.
