In Sri Lanka’s Nuwara Eliya, arrangements for tomorrow’s state Vesak festival are in full swing. The Vesak festival, which marks the birth, enlightenment and passing away of Gautama Buddha, is the most significant religious and cultural festival in the island nation, celebrated with deep reverence and vibrant public displays.

Streets, homes, temples, and public spaces have been decorated with colourful lanterns and massive pandals depicting stories from the Buddha’s life.

Sri Lankans observe the day by visiting temples for prayers, meditation, and sermons. Temporary stalls called Dansalas provide free meals and refreshments to all, symbolising generosity and equality.

Vesak in Sri Lanka is not just a religious event but a national expression of peace, compassion, and unity, reminding everyone of the timeless teachings of the Buddha.
