Domestic equity markets closed sharply higher on Monday, buoyed by improved global risk sentiment after the United States and Iran announced a peace agreement, easing geopolitical tensions in West Asia and alleviating concerns over energy market disruptions.

The benchmark BSE Sensex advanced 736.38 points, or 0.97 per cent, to settle at 76,264.33, while the NSE Nifty 50 gained 231 points, or 0.98 per cent, to close at 23,853.90. The rally reflected broad-based buying across sectors as investors responded positively to the prospect of greater geopolitical stability.

Market participants welcomed reports that Washington and Tehran had agreed to halt military operations with immediate effect, bringing an end to a four-month conflict that had heightened uncertainty across global financial markets. The development is expected to reduce risks to crude oil supplies from the region, a key concern for oil-importing economies such as India.

Lower geopolitical risk typically supports foreign capital flows into emerging markets and helps moderate crude oil prices, both of which are viewed favourably for India’s inflation outlook, fiscal position and corporate profitability.

The gains extended beyond frontline indices. The Nifty MidCap 100 index rose 1.29 per cent, while the Nifty SmallCap 100 index climbed 1.11 per cent, indicating strong participation from broader market segments.

Sectoral Heatmap: Domestic Cyclicals Lead the Charge

The rally was characterized by robust market breadth, with capital rotating heavily into high-beta and domestic consumption sectors.

  • Realty on Fire: The Nifty Realty index was the undisputed showstopper, surging over 4%. The sector benefited from expectations of stable interest rates and wealth-effect buying.
  • Consumption & Auto Pivot: The Nifty Consumer Durables and Nifty Auto indices comfortably outperformed the broader market. Investors aggressively accumulated frontline automakers and discretionary plays, betting on sustained domestic demand.
  • Defensives Take a Backseat: In a classic risk-on environment, capital deserted defensive pockets. The Nifty Pharma index emerged as the session’s laggard as fund managers shifted allocations toward cyclical growth sectors.

Among Nifty constituents, Trent, Shriram Finance and HDFC Life Insurance emerged as the top performers, attracting significant investor interest during the session.

On the sectoral front, real estate stocks led the advance, with the Nifty Realty index surging more than 4 per cent. Analysts attributed the move to renewed optimism surrounding domestic growth prospects and expectations of sustained demand in the housing market.

Consumer-facing sectors also outperformed, with the Nifty Consumer Durables and Nifty Auto indices registering robust gains as investors increased exposure to domestic consumption themes.

Pharmaceutical stocks, however, underperformed the broader market. The Nifty Pharma index ended as the weakest sectoral gauge, reflecting profit-booking and a shift towards higher-beta cyclical sectors amid improving risk sentiment.

Technical analysts noted that the Nifty is approaching a key resistance zone near the 24,000 mark. A decisive move above this level could open the door for further upside in the near term. On the downside, the 23,800 level is expected to serve as immediate support, with market participants closely monitoring whether the index can sustain gains above this threshold.

Investor attention is now expected to shift towards upcoming domestic macroeconomic data, foreign institutional investor (FII) activity, global commodity trends and signals from major central banks, all of which could influence market direction in the coming weeks.

The latest rally underscores the sensitivity of global and domestic markets to geopolitical developments, particularly those affecting energy supplies and inflation expectations. For India, any sustained stability in crude oil prices would provide a significant tailwind for economic growth and corporate earnings during the current financial year.
