Yakub Memon to be hanged on July 30 as SC rejects curative petition

The Supreme Court deferred by a day its hearing of a petition by 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon seeking a stay on his execution set for July 30. The apex court will continue hearing it on Tuesday.

The Maharastra government said Memon, brother of prime accused Tiger Memon, was given a week’s time to file a curative petition before the Supreme Court after his review plea was dismissed.

The Supreme Court today said it can not go on merits of the Yakub Abdul Razak Memon case, and added that nothing further required as everything has been decided. The Court sought clarification from Attorney General on rules for curative petition as Memon says death warrant was issued before SC decision on his petition. The Court will continue the hearing tomorrow.

Yakub Memon had sought a stay of his death sentence after the Apex Court had on 21st July rejected his mercy petition. Memon moved the Supreme Court contending that the death warrant for his execution was issued before he could have exhausted the legal remedies available to him. He also sought that his death sentence be stayed by the Apex Court.

Memon had also filed a mercy petition before the Maharashtra Governor seeking commutation of his death sentence to life imprisonment.
