The impeachment has initiated on two grounds of misconduct. Earlier A three-member panel set up by the Rajya Sabha had found Justice Sen guilty of proven misconduct.
The charges include misappropriation of large sums of money, which he received in his capacity as receiver appointed by the Calcutta High Court as a lawyer in 1984 and misrepresentation of facts before the court.
The motion for the removal of Justice Sen was moved in the house by Mr Sitaram Yechury and Mr Prasanta Chatterjee, both CPIM and Mr Arun Jaitley of the BJP. A total of 58 members from Rajya Sabha had represented for removal of Justice Sen from his office. Moving the motion, Mr Yechury said it is high time when the corruption against people at high places have to be probed and brought to justice.
Defending himself, Justice Soumitra Sen, pleaded innocence on all counts of charges. In his over two-hour argument, Justice Sen impressed upon the House that no misappropriation was committed by him in the capacity of a receiver of the court or a judge of the High Court.
Later, the Leader of Opposition, Mr Arun Jaitley, told the house that Justice Sen misled the house while representing the facts. Supporting the motion of impeachment proceedings, Mr Jaitley said that Justice Soumitra Sen with his proven misbehaviour is unfit to hold the high office of justice.
The proceedings remained inconclusive and the Chairman adjourned the house for the day.
