Indian equities witnessed an explosive rally on Friday, with benchmark indices recording one of their best single-day gains in recent months. The market surge was fueled by a sharp retreat in global crude oil prices and a significant de-escalation in US-Iran geopolitical friction. Investor sentiment, which had been plagued by uncertainty, received a massive boost following hints of a potential peace accord between Washington and Tehran.
The buying momentum was broad-based, spanning all major sectors. High-beta financial and private banking stocks led the charge, providing the necessary muscle to lift the frontline indices. The S&P BSE Sensex skyrocketed 1,695.40 points, or 2.30%, to finish at 75,527.95. Concurrently, the broader Nifty 50 index crossed critical psychological thresholds, surging 461.30 points, or 1.99%, to close the session comfortably at 23,622.90. Heavyweights like Larsen & Toubro (up 4.87%), HDFC Bank (up 3.67%), and Reliance Industries (up 2.64%) acted as the primary growth engines for the Nifty.
Global Tailwinds and the Oil Slide
The primary catalyst for Friday’s market euphoria was the visible softening of geopolitical rhetoric. Global markets rallied after US President Donald Trump stated that Washington and Tehran were close to finalizing a peace deal ensuring Iran would not acquire nuclear weapons. This followed a Truth Social post where Trump confirmed he had called off planned military strikes on Iran.
This diplomatic breakthrough had an immediate impact on the commodities market. Brent crude futures for July 2026 delivery tumbled $3.27, or 3.62%, to settle at $87.11 per barrel. For an import-dependent economy like India, sub-$88 crude significantly alleviates fiscal pressures, cools imported inflation, and improves corporate margins, which triggered immediate buying across domestic counters.
The positive global sentiment was reflected across international markets. In the US, the S&P 500 had closed 1.75% higher at 7,394.30, the Nasdaq Composite gained 2.54% to 25,809.66, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.86% to 50,848.75. Dow Jones futures pointed to a continuation of this rally, gaining 249 points. European and Asian indices similarly posted sharp gains. Meanwhile, global investor attention remained glued to the historic Nasdaq debut of SpaceX under the ticker SPCX. At a fixed price of $135 per share, the $75 billion IPO is set to become the largest in history, valuing Elon Musk’s aerospace firm at $1.77 trillion.
Domestic Volatility Cools as Mid-Caps Outperform
Reflecting the relief on Dalal Street, the NSE’s India VIX—often referred to as the market’s fear gauge—tanked 5.73% to 14.72, signaling a sharp reduction in near-term volatility expectations. Market breadth was overwhelmingly positive: on the BSE, 3,222 shares advanced against 1,046 that declined, while 171 remained unchanged. Risk appetite returned to the broader markets as well, with the BSE 150 MidCap Index gaining 2.37% and the BSE 250 SmallCap Index outperforming with a 2.60% climb.
In primary markets, Hexagon Nutrition made a successful debut. The stock listed at Rs 48 on the BSE, a 6.67% premium, before settling at its day’s high of Rs 50.39, marking an 11.98% gain over its issue price of Rs 45 on total volumes exceeding 14.20 lakh shares.
