Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis has sought clarification from Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria over his meeting with tainted former IPL boss Lalit Modi in London.

A fresh controversy broke out in the Lalit Modi episode after it emerged that Maria had met Modi in London in 2014. Modi had sought the help of Mumbai Police in view of ‘threat’ to his life by the underworld in London.

Admitting that he had met Modi on the insistence of the latter’s lawyer, Maria yesterday clarified that he had apprised the Home Minister about the meeting soon after returning from London. Issuing a statement, Maria said that in July 2014, he had officially attended a conference in London and there he was approached by an advocate representing Lalit Modi who stated that his client wanted to meet him regarding a grave threat to his life and that of his family in London.

Then, Maria informed Modi that Mumbai Police have no jurisdiction in London and that he should return to Mumbai to lodge a formal complaint. But Modi kept on requesting Mumbai police’s intervention against the underworld.

Modi, the first Commissioner of Indian Premier League, and others are facing probe by the Enforcement Directorate in the alleged forex violation case.
