Governor invites Kumaraswamy to form new govt
AMN / BANGALORE
Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala has invited former Chief Minister and JD(S) State President H D Kumaraswamy to form the new government in the State.
This comes in the aftermath of BJP Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa resigned to the post even before proving the floor test in the Assembly session yesterday. Mr Yeddyurappa was sworn in as chief minister on Thursday.
Talking to media persons in Bengaluru yesterday, Mr Kumaraswamy said, the swearing-in ceremony will take place on next Wednesday. He said, the governor has given the JD(S)-Congress combine 15 days to prove majority in the house. The move comes after Mr Kumaraswamy met Governor and staked claim to form a new government in the state.
The third son of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda had earlier headed the BJP-JD(S) coalition government for twenty months from January 2006. The May 12 assembly polls threw up a hung assembly, with the BJP emerging as the single largest party with 104 seats. The Congress got 78 seats and the JD(S) along with its alliance partner BSP, won 38 seats.
BJP president Amit Shah has said that governments formed by Congress-JD(S) alliances in Karnataka are unlikely to last long. In his first comments after BJP leader B S Yeddyurappa resigned as the chief minister of Karnataka yesterday, Mr.Shah rubbished charges of horse-trading by his party and maintained the party did not indulge in any manipulation and said rather it was the Congress which not only indulged in horse-trading but has “bought the entire stable.
Speaking in New Delhi yesterday, Mr. Shah hit back at Rahul Gandhi over the latter’s corruption charges against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he does not take the remarks of the Congress president seriously.
The BJP president exuded confidence the BJP would win more seats in the 2019 general elections than it won in 2014. He asserted that the mandate given by the people of Karnataka favoured BJP, which emerged as the single largest party winning 104 seats.
