A United Nations court has sentenced former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic to 40 years in prison for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes during the Bosnian war in the 1990s. The 70-year-old was found guilty of genocide for the massacre of 8,000 Muslim men and boys in the town of Srebrenica in eastern Bosnia, and nine other charges of murder, persecution and hostage-taking. Karadzic was captured in 2008 and will serve a further 32 years.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hailed Karadzic’s conviction as a historic day for international criminal justice. Mr Ban said, the judgment sends a strong signal to all who are in positions of responsibility that they will be held accountable for their actions.
